London 2012 - Volunteers galore in UK


Up to 100,000 people will be interviewed to become a volunteer for the London 2012 Games, Sebastian Coe has revealed.

Over the next 14 months, a team of 2,500 interviewers will decide who will make up the 70,000-strong Games Maker volunteer team. Nearly 250,000 people have applied.

Tuesday's official opening of London 2012's selection centre at the ExCeL in east London signals the start of the UK's biggest peace-time recruitment drive.

Over 300 people a day will attend a selection event in Britain in the run-up to 2012 including a 30-minute interview and a chance to see an exhibition on Games volunteering.

Speaking as organisers threw open the centre's doors, the London 2012 chairman Lord Coe said they would be seeking people to go beyond their personal best.

David Love tipped to become 2012 US Ryder Cup captain

Los Angeles: Former PGA Championship winner Davis Love III is widely expected to be appointed United States captain for the 2012 Ryder Cup by the PGA of America.

The 46-year-old American, a veteran of six Ryder Cups as a player, has long expressed his desire to lead the US team in the biennial competition against Europe.

Love was one of four vice-captains to Corey Pavin in October when Europe reclaimed the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor by a single point in Wales and is held in high esteem by his peers on the PGA Tour.

The PGA of America will officially announce the 2012 US Ryder Cup captain from 10 a.m. CST (1600 GMT) on a conference call at Medinah Country Club in Medinah near Chicago.

Any lingering fears over the suitability of Poland and Ukraine as co-hosts for the 2012 European Championship have finally been expelled.

Preparations in both countries have not been without problems but on Monday in Belarus, Uefa's executive committee announced the match schedule.

It had already been confirmed that all eight venues, four in Poland and four in Ukraine, would host matches but now Uefa has confirmed the calendar of where the host countries will play their group games and the venues for the knock-out stages.

In Poland, Wroclaw and Poznan will host three group stage matches, while Gdansk will host three group stage matches and a quarter-final. Warsaw will stage three group stage matches, including the opening Group A game featuring Poland, a quarter-final and a semi-final.

Poland will play their second group match in Warsaw, and their third in Wroclaw.

NBA commissioner David Stern has reiterated his commitment to playing regular-season basketball games in London prior to the 2012 Olympics.

Stern made the statement while announcing that the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves will square off at London's O2 Arena on October 4 in a pre-season game as part of the NBA Europe Live tour, which also visits France, Spain and Italy.
