New Delhi: India created history on Monday by breaking the 52-year-old jinx with Krishna Poonia
winning the yellow metal in women's discus throw to become the first woman from the country to win a
Commowealth Games gold here.
India swept the event with Harwant Kaur and national record holder Seema Antil also winning the
silver and bronze respectively.
Poonia's gold, which she won by throwing the discus to 61.51m, was the first gold after 'Flying
Sikh' Milkha Singh's 440 yard race gold in the 1958 edition of the Games in Cardiff, Wales.
Harwant came up with an effort of 60.61m, a tad below her season's best of 60.66m, while national
record holder Seema Antil threw the discus to a distance of 58.46m.

New Delhi: Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi feels the world-class
infrastructure and the facilities, which have come up for the multi-discipline event, have put the
national capital ahead by 10 years.
The city is 10 years ahead now. Earlier people would fly from Delhi to Dubai, Singapore and many
other destinations. Now they will land here, see the beautiful city, Kalmadi said addressing the
gathering at the Queen's Baton arrival at the OC's headquarters in Delhi on Thursday.
Delhi is all set for the Games. We have a first class airport, a great Metro connectivity that
stretches right from the airport to the Games Village and to all the venues. Roads are just great;
the entire city is spruced up. You have got everything, he added.
The senior Congress leader also said the October 3-14 mega-event does not belong to any political...

The Google dozen
In this fast-paced digital era 1998 seems to be ages ago. It was in that year that two Stanford
university students got together to form a company that would change the face of the Internet, for
ever. As Google celebrates 12th birthday, here's a flashback of the 12 most important milestones in
the Google story.

In September 1999, Larry Page and Sergey Brin set up an office, like many Silicon Valey startups, in
a garage and filed for incorporation and Google Inc was born. By June 2000, the Google search engine
had indexed the first billion URLs to become the word's largest search engine.

New York: A technical glitch blocked or slowed access to Facebook for several hours Thursday,
unplugging many of the social-networking site's 500 million users from the constant flow of updates
from their friends.
Facebook called it the worst outage we've had in over four years in a blog post published late
Thursday.
The company blamed a software flaw that caused a cluster of its databases to be overwhelmed.
Facebook said it had to shut down the entire site to stop traffic to the databases. The company
estimated the problems persisted for about two and a half hours.
By evening, the site was again running smoothly, but some people affected by the problems were still
cooling off.
Jennifer Sokolowsky, a freelance writer and editor in Seattle, was in the middle of contacting some
Facebook friends about a possible job when the site slowed to a frustrating crawl.

Magic keep Re**** for $19M, 3 years
In a move that highlights his remarkable NBA turnaround, the same Orlando Magic team that once
benched Re**** shelled out $19 million Friday to retain the shooting guard. They matched a
three-year offer sheet that the Chicago Bulls made for Re**** last week that could cost Orlando much
more.
The decision drives the Magic deeper into the luxury tax and gives them one of the NBA's highest
payrolls at about $93 million next season. The move keeps Orlando's roster mostly intact as the
Magic hope continuity will overcome Miami's All-Star trio and Boston's Big Three in the Eastern
Conference.
When it came down to it, when we're talking about what we're trying to do here, it came down for me
to pedigree, DNA, things that most people don't think about, Orlando general manager Otis Smith
said. It was less about the money for me, being the basketball guy, and more about keeping a guy
around that we've had in our organization for the past four years.

MADRID (AFP) - Serena and Venus Williams are back on top of the
world. More than 15 years after the history-making sisters blew into the women's game with hurricane
force, they are still putting their rivals, many of them 10 years younger, to shame.
When the new WTA rankings are released on Monday, Serena will remain number one while Venus climbs
back to second.
The Florida pair last stood together at the summit from May 5-11, 2003, with Venus dropping to third
on May 12 to end that brief duopoly.
In between, Serena and Venus, who turned pro in 1995 and 1994 respectively, have watched the
generations come and go, with the rise of the Russians, Serbs and Belgians.
But despite fluctuations in their rankings - Serena won the 2007 Australian Open after finishing the
previous season standing 95th and having played only four events in 2006 - their staying power has
been phenomenal.
Venus assured her rise from fourth to second behind her sibling by reaching the third round of this...

A day after it emerged that the radioactive scrap that killed one and poisoned seven came from
Delhi University, the central varsity got a showcause notice from the Atomic Energy Regulatory
Board.
The Board directed DU to stop nuclear radiation-related operations for two weeks — the time it has
to reply to the notice.
If we aren't satisfied, we will take action that could include cancellation of license for practical
research in radiation, said Board chairman SS Bajaj.
The incident at a scrapyard in Mayapuri even got the attention of the International Atomic Energy
Agency, which called it the most serious global instance of radiation exposure since 2006. Its
N-waste specialist, Didier Louvat, was quoted in the New York Times as saying: Nuclear safety review
in 2009 found 196 nuclear… ‘events', including those involving scrap, compared with 140 in
2007.
The radiation exposure could be a blow to Indian science too, if DU loses its licence. The
university runs two nuclear physics courses — MSc physics with specialisation in nuclear science...
